Republican Maryland State Delegate Patrick McDonough has suggested that, in the face of the Baltimore Uprising, families whose children that participate in the protests against the unlawful death of Freddie Gray should not be able to receive food stamps anymore.

On a Baltimore radio program, a caller asked McDonough if it would be possible to “take away benefits from families, from like the parents who are collecting welfare.” McDonough responded by agreeing: “That’s an idea and that could be legislation. I think that you could make the case that there is a failure to do proper parenting and allowing this stuff to happen, is there an opportunity for a month to take away your food stamps?”

McDonough continued to note that a scientific study is needed to understand the mindset of protesters which he labeled as “thug nation”:

“These young people, they’re violent, they’re brutal, their mindset is dysfunctional to a point of being dangerous. We have got to study, investigate, and really look at what this is all about.”

One of the issues that has come to the forefront since protests began in Baltimore is the tragic state of economic affairs that many Black residents live under. Poverty, joblessness and a lack of opportunity are among the problems that these citizens are raising awareness of. Punishing Black people for speaking out against police brutality is not only egregious on its face, State Delegate McDonough is advocating for taking away more resources from an already impoverished city.
