Just a few days ago, we told you that the NFL has vowed to impose stronger penalties on players involved in domestic violence scenarios. Now, with less than one week before the official season is set to begin, it’s time to see whether or not the league keeps their word.

49ers defensive end Ray McDonald was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with felony domestic violence, the Sacramento Bee reports. Officers arrived at the 29-year-old’s home, where he was celebrating his forthcoming 30th birthday at approximately 2:50 am.

The officers were called to the scene due to an altercation reported to have occurred between McDonald and his fiancée, who is said to be 10 weeks pregnant. The woman showed officers minor bruises or her neck and arm once they arrived on the scene. McDonald was carted off and booked at the Santa Clara County Jail for “inflicting injury on a spouse or cohabitant” at approximately 5:30 am. Bail was set at $25,000 and he was released by 11:30 am. 49ers general manager Trent Baalke has already released comment regarding the incident.

“The 49ers organization is aware of the recent reports regarding Ray McDonald and we take such matters seriously,” Baalke said in a statement. “As we continue to gather the facts, we will reserve further comment.”

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh told players in the past that violence against women will not be tolerated on his team, so it will be interesting to see how this all pans out in the coming weeks.
