The surgeon who many believe is responsible for the 2007 death of Kanye West’s mother, Donda West, is speaking out and demanding that the Grammy Award-winning rapper clear his name. According to Dr. Jan Adams, he was wrongfully portrayed as a janky surgeon who directly contributed to West’s demise.
“It baffles me when nobody wants to know the truth,” Adams told the New York Daily News. “I think (Kanye) should stand up and tell the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Adam says that what many don’t realize is that West died in her California home one day after being released into the care of her cousin, Stephan Scoggins, who is a nurse with a Ph.D. in public health.
“Most people that I run into think she died on the table, they don’t even know this lady was home for a day,” said Adams. “The truth hasn’t been revealed.”
According to the California surgeon, he suggested that the 58-year-old be placed in the care of a private post-surgery recovery center following her liposuction, tummy tuck, and breast reduction surgeries, but the family insisted that she be treated at home. One day after the procedure, Scoggins reportedly left the home to attend a friend’s baby shower, leaving West in the care of untrained friends, which is when she died.
Adams and a coroner’s report suggest that multiple post-care mistakes contributed to West’s death, including that she consumed 20 Vicodin pills in less than 24 hours and that she was allowed to lie on her back. She wound up choking on her own vomit.
“She aspirated the food contents into her lungs and that’s that,” said Adams. “And four minutes later you’re dead. Jimi Hendrix, that’s how he died. It ain’t magical.”
West was pronounced dead on November 10, 2007 at Centinela Freeman Hospital. The coroner’s report never determined an exact “manner of death,” but noted that vomiting and “medication use for pain” contributed to West’s death.
“It’s a complete tragedy,” said Adams. “Don’t get me wrong, it makes me sick. She was a nice person. I do feel sad about what happened.”
Although the coroner’s report didn’t point the finger at Adams for West’s death, due to her health conditions, other doctors including a rival surgeon who refused to perform the procedures on West, called Adams’ decision to operate on the former Chicago State University faculty member reckless. She suffered from high blood pressure and high blood sugar.
Adams shares that while he would like the rapper to speak up and let the world know that he is not to blame for West’s death, he knows that the chances of this happening are unlikely.
“I think the truth needs to be out there. If he had any b—s or if he was any kind of man he could (speak up). But the real answer is he probably won’t.”
