Darnisha Robinson of Mishawaka, Indiana was arrested last Friday after her 5-year-old son called 911 because he was hungry, ABC 57 reports.
Responding officers discovered the boy and his 10-month-old brother inside of their apartment at the Pin Oak Manor housing complex alone and without food. Chief of Police in Mishawaka, Ken Witkowski, later told reporters that Robinson’s apartment was in terrible condition. Police say that the children were in the home for more than four hours without adult supervision.
“It’s very heartbreaking, anytime children are involved or any kind of mistreatment of children that can’t fend for themselves, it’s very heartbreaking,” Witkowski said. “Some of them are family guys or women, and they have children at home, so I think it strikes inside. I think it brings out some kinds of heart-felt feelings.”
“The little boy called 911 because he was hungry, and he didn’t know what to do. And as I was actually standing there, I watched the cops bring McDonald’s to the little boys and feed them,” said neighbor Desirae Nichols.
Robinson returned home to find cops swarming her apartment building. Child Protective Services were called to the family’s apartment to investigate. She was eventually arrested at the scene.
“The cops brought the boys over to the side and brought Transformer toys, Spongebob toys, to try and distract the boys, so they didn’t have to see their mother get taken away,” Nichols said. “I think the cops handled the situation the best possible way they could. They were definitely heroes in the situation.”
Robinson was charged with child neglect. She was later released on bond.
