Just yesterday, we reported about the tough job ahead for Baltimore’s newly elected state attorney, Marilyn Mosby.

The 35-year-old, raised in a family of police officers, made an unexpected announcement this morning. She said that the state is filing charges against the six officers who had Freddie Gray in custody when he died.

According to the New York Times, Mosby stated, during the press conference, that all six officers are facing criminal charges and warrants have been issued for their arrest. Her announcement was met with cheers from the audience.

Officials have ruled the death and homicide. Mosby said that Gray was arrested without grounds. In fact, she said, “No crime was committed by Freddie Gray. The knife was not a switch-blade and it is lawful. [The] officers failed to establish probable cause for an arrest.”

She continued saying the police violated procedure by placing him in handcuffs and leg restraints in a van without a seatbelt.

Mosby also said that the officers failed, on numerous occasions, to seek medical attention for Gray. By the time he was removed from the van, he was not breathing at all.

Mosby said that the six officers will all be charged.

The Times reports:

One officer, Caesar R. Goodson Jr. was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, assault and misconduct in office. Lt. Brian W. Rice was charged with manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. Officer William G. Porter and Sgt. Alicia D. White were each charged with manslaughter, assault and misconduct in office. Officers Edward M. Nero and Garrett E. Miller were charged with assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment.

During the conference, Mosby made sure to note that the charges were not a condemnation of the entire police department, but she also stated, “No one is above the law.”
