Whoopi Goldberg
Early on in Whoopi Goldberg’s career, she was still going by her birth name Caryn Elaine Johnson. Getting her start in theatre, Goldberg got used to having no privacy backstage and sharing her space with other people and her flatulence earned her the name “Whoopi” because she sounded like a whoopie cushion breaking wind. The name stuck and she used “Goldberg” as a last name hoping the Jewish surname would open up more doors for her.
