Last summer, a child abuse investigation was opened against Houston Rockets player Dwight Howard after his ex, Royce Reed, accused him of physically disciplining their 6-year-old son Braylon. The investigation was closed in November and then reopened after a doctor examined Braylon’s injuries and explained that they were consistent with a history “of being struck with a belt numerous times by his father.”
On Monday, the investigation was closed again and Atlanta law enforcement confirmed that they would not be pressing charges against Howard.
“I can confirm we are not moving forward with charges in this case,” Sgt. Gregory Lyon told FOX 26 in an email.
According to TMZ, Reed is disheartened by the decision and claims that their son is afraid of his father.
“She never asked for Dwight to be arrested. She asked for him to get help and take parenting classes. Her child is terrified of his father,” a source claiming to be close to Reed told the site.
Howard’s attorney, however, thinks the comments are absurd.
“Several law enforcement agencies have thoroughly investigated the allegations and all decided against filing charges,” said David Oscar Markus. “It is sad that Royce Reed continues to use her son as a pawn with the media, despite court orders prohibiting her from doing so.”
Markus also commented on his client being cleared of charges.
“We are gratified that the Atlanta Police Department, after fully examining the frivolous allegations against Dwight Howard, has closed the case and decided not to proceed with charges.”
We’re not really sure what to think about all of this, but it’s unfortunate that little Braylon is trapped in the middle of this madness. We would hope that these abuse allegations are false.
