With children saying goodbye to school for summer, many parents are scrambling to find alternative care that won’t break the bank. This can make the season a real drag even though it’s supposed to be one of the most anticipated times of year.

Friends of mine with children really have a tough time with this . Some plan ahead for the inevitable while others almost always wait until the very last minute to find help. Needless to say, the later you wait, the less likely you are to find available options. Once my kids become school age, I’ll probably save some of my tax return to help fund my summer needs (also trips and activities). Granted they’ll be able to take care of themselves by a certain age, but that doesn’t stop the present need for summer childcare.

From the sound of things, it can get pretty expensive.

If you happen to be a parent still searching for affordable options, here are some summer childcare ideas you might want to consider.

Request a flex schedule at work. Companies for the most part experience a lull during summer. Because of this, it might be easier to work a more flexible schedule. This will definitely come in handy if you need to pick up your kids from camp or daycare. Telecommuting is also a good option as you can work from home and cut down on the amount you need to spend on childcare. Just make sure you try your best to actually get work done (it can be hard with kids).

Summer school program. Certain schools are in session during summer and provide day trip opportunities for your kids to enjoy. Inquire with your child’s school about these programs and associated costs. It’s also a great idea to check out other schools in your districts as opportunities may differ from place to place.

Community programs. Organizations like your local YMCA and religious houses have tons of summer programs. While you’ll more than likely need to pay, they should be more affordable compared to general summer camp costs and fees.

Close friends and family. Let’s be honest, loved ones certainly come in handy for many things. Have an honest sit down with close friends and family to ask if they can help watch your child during the summer months. Even if it’s only for a few hours or a couple days a week, that’s money you can save on expensive childcare. Note: It’s always good practice to give them a little something in the financial department. At the very least you need to cover your child’s meals and activities.

Summer camps. There’s nothing wrong with summer camps. Not only are they fun but can be very educational — and a great way to make friends. One way to save money is to enroll your child as soon as possible. The earlier you do so the more likely it is you’ll save money. It’s also more budget-friendly if you opt for a half day program or one that meets a few times a week. Hopefully a friend or family member can fill in the other areas of need.
