Celebrities have been reacting to the Baltimore uprising in various ways. Over the weekend, ¼ of 90s R&B sensation Dru Hill, which hails from Baltimore, took to social media to share his interesting symbol of support.
Saturday evening, lead singer Mark “SisQó” Andrews revealed that he has chosen to “sacrifice” his hair to outwardly recognize the unrest in his hometown. Throughout the years, SisQó’s blonde Caesar cut became his signature look, but he decided to try something different to show the grieving city that he stands with them. Apparently, work obligations have kept him away from Baltimore, but he vowed to join forces with the rest of Dru Hill to return to the city in the future. The post, which was accompanied by a photo of the “Incomplete” singer wearing a dark, shorter-than-usual haircut, reads:
I sacrificed my hair as a symbol of support for the struggle that Baltimore & most inner-city youth face every day. My hair has been my signature around the world since our careers started hand n hand with being a Baltimore native good, bad, or ugly. It wrenched my heart when I saw the way that we were being portrayed to the world media.
The fact that I was unable to march on the streets of my city with my brothers & sisters physically made me feel as if I needed to make a statement that couldn’t be tainted, twisted, or misconstrued. I have worked with local schools, churches & youth groups in the past. Myself & DRU HILL are working to do more in the future. So hang in there young people…and remember think outside-of-the-box. Be better than the best & always remember intellect over emotion.
While most fans praised the 36-year-old for the symbolic gesture, some slammed him and expressed that they did not see the significance. While we’ve definitely been affected by horrible police-related deaths here in New York, I have never been forced to witness my hometown be torn apart in such a way by a tragedy like the death of Freddie Gray; so I don’t know what that feels like and I won’t begin to criticize SisQó for his actions.
