Mariah Carey’s new single “Infinity” was widely perceived as somewhat of a diss track aimed at her soon-to-be ex-husband Nick Cannon. But the mother of two insists that this is not the case.
“I don’t feel like it’s my personal life. It’s written for all the women, or men, or whoever’s gone through any type of relationship,” Carey told Access Hollywood.
Instead, the 45-year-old insists that the track is simply about self-love.
“I’m looking at it as the mantra of ‘Infinity’ is love yourself… loving yourself first to infinity,” she explained. “It’s like someone emancipating themselves. It’s like my re-emancipation of Mimi. I wanted everybody to be able to sing along with [me]. It’s a big chorus.”
She adds that even if the song was about Nick, she wouldn’t share that information anyway.
“I tend to be more private about my personal life anyway, so even if the song were about someone in particular, I would never say that, because that would be like my own private thought,” Carey said. “We had a bunch of collaborator on that song too.”
Although many have already made up their minds that “Infinity” is taking shots at Nick, the “America’s Got Talent” host doesn’t seem to be taking the song personally. Earlier this week he took to Instagram to praise his estranged wife for the new project.
Whether she was singing about Nick or not, I’m just glad to see Mimi putting out new music. She seemed to be in a bit of a rut since the split.
